Front: In 1876, residents of the Providence section of Sumter County organized Tirzah Presbyterian Church. They included members of the Bryan, Dick, Jennings, Knox, and Raffield families who previously worshipped at Sumter Presbyterian Church (9 mi. S) but desired a more convenient meeting place. They subsequently built a church on this 2-acre lot, deeded to the congregation in 1877. Reverse: Tradition holds the building here was initially a shell that was later finished and remodeled. A cemetery occupies much of the land received in 1877 as well as another lot acquired later. An education building was constructed southwest of the church in 1948. The congregation was active until 2020. Throughout their history they met in the original structure, which still stands today.
