Morgan House

Front: This 1-story residence dates to c.1893 and was the family home of Jeptha N. Morgan (1859-1923) and Minnie E. Morgan (1867-1951). Both born in Pickens County, the couple lived here upon their 1894 marriage. Jeptha was one of central’s leading merchants and co-founded Morgan’s Store in the 1880s and the Bank of Central in 1904, both major commercial institutions of their time. Minnie and their daughters Jennie and Jessie continued to live here and own the store after Jeptha’s death. Reverse: The Morgan House is a notable local example of the changing architectural tastes of the early 20th century. Originally built in the Queen Anne style with elaborate exterior details, it later underwent a Classical Revival-style renovation that expanded the porch and added Doric columns and roof gables. The Morgan family lived in the house until 1994. It became the Central History Museum in 1995 and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
