Central Roller Mills

Front: Incorporated in 1898, the Central Roller Mills Co. acquired this site in 1899 and began operations by the following year. More efficient and reliable than earlier stone-based grist mills, roller mills used steel rollers to mill kernels of grain into flour, grits, or corn meal. Upcountry S.C. millers increasingly adopted the use of roller mills in the late 19th and early 20th century. Reverse: The roller mill complex that stands today is believed to be one of the most intact of its type in the state. Portions of the main mill building date to around 1900. Additions to that structure as well as silos and other support buildings were built by the 1930s. Pendleton Oil Mill purchased the property in 1934 and continued to use it as a roller mill. The mill closed in 1980.
