Centenary Rosenwald School

Front: Centenary Rosenwald School was built here in 1924-25. It was one of 500 rural schools in S.C. for blacks, constructed with partial funding from the Julius Rosenwald Foundation from 1917 to 1932. A two-room frame school, it was built at a cost of $2,100. An average of 125 students a year attended, at first in grades 1-7 but later adding grades 8-12. Centenary School closed in 1954. Reverse: Terrell’s Bay High School was built in 1954 by the equalization program intended to preserve segregation by building new schools for blacks. It, a new Terrell’s Bay Elementary, and a new Pleasant Grove Elementary replaced Centenary Rosenwald School and Rains Colored School. Terrell’s Bay High was desegregated in 1970. It closed in 2003 when two county school districts were consolidated.
