Carolina Hotel

Front: Constructed c. 1905, this two-story building originally housed the Carolina Hotel. Then made of exposed brick, the hotel was likely built by owners James B. Streater and John T. Hurst, who hoped to serve passengers on the nearby Chesterfield and Lancaster Railroad. The building also served as a commercial mall and is believed to have housed a general store, bank, market, and, in the 1920s, an automobile dealership located on the first floor. Reverse: Chesterfield and Lancaster Railroad, chartered in 1887, operated a depot 500 ft. E. Work on the line began in 1900. It reached the town in 1901, becoming the first railroad to pass through Chesterfield. It carried passengers as well as freight, especially lumber products. Later part of the Seaboard Air Line, the 35 mi. track spanned Cheraw (east) and Crowburg (west), never reaching Lancaster. The line was abandoned in 1941.
