He commanded the flank battalion of the Nineteenth Regiment of the British Army, and was distinguished for his bravery and generosity. He is said to have saved the life of Cok. William Washington at the Battle of Eutaw, September 8, 1781, by turning aside the bayonet of a British soldier. Taken desperately ill on the retreat, he died in the cabin of a Negro slave on Wantoot Plantation.
