Mt. Sinai United Methodist Church and Cemetery

Front: This is the original site of Mt. Sinai United Methodist Church, an historically African American congregation organized by 1870. Members first met here under a brush arbor and then built a meeting house. The site was donated to the church in 1874 by heirs of Rev. David Humphreys, a white minister. Reverse: Mt. Sinai became an important institution for the Rock Mills area of Anderson County. An adjoining cemetery dating to its earliest years contains hundreds of graves. Camp meetings at this site drew as many as 2,000 people. Mt. Sinai School was built here c.1895. The church had twelve members in 2025.
