A bronze tablet was placed on old "pudding rock" located at "The Wattering Place," now known as Founder's Brook. On this tablet was the following inscription: "1638 1936" "Erected to honor the memory and perpetuate the spirit and ideals of the Founders of the First Government in the world to allow and to insure its citizens civil and religious liberty established on this site in the year 1638. PORTSMOUTH COMPACT We whose names are underwritten do here solemnly in the presence of Jehovah incorporate ourselves with a Bodie Politick and as He shall help, will submit our persons, lives and estates unto our Lord Jesus Christ, the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, and to all those perfect and most absolute lawes of His given us in His Holy Word of Truth to be guided and judged thereby.
