Butterfield Overland Mail Route

Le Flore County · south of Coal Creek on US 271, approximately 1/2 mile south of the junction of US 271 and OK 31

The famous Butterfield Overland Mail Route crossed Coal Creek near here. The route, traversing 192 miles in Indian Territory from Fort Smith to Colbert’s Ferry on the Red River, had 12 stage stations. Coaches made the trip twice a week each way from 1858 to 1860.
