Battle of the J. R. Williams

Haskell County · on OK-9, four miles east of Stigler

A Civil War naval battle occurred in Indian Territory on June 15, 1864, when Confederate forces led by Brigadier General Stand Watie forced aground and captured the Union steamboat J. R. Williams. The cargo was valued at $120,000. Confederate troops included Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole soldiers.
