Breckenridge
During the Sioux Outbreak of 1862, this town, laid out in 1857 and named for John C. Breckenridge, was all but abandoned. Three men only remained behind in the hotel, and these on August 23, 1862, were killed by the Indians. The same day a mail stage was attacked near the town and its driver killed.
Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
