Known also as "Old Town", about one quarter mile south, named for Major George B. Clitherall, U. S. land officer, was settled in 1865 by a seceding group of Latter Day Saints. The community flourished for many years but gradually disintegrated, and with the building of the New Clitherall, the old town has nearly disappeared.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
