At the "Crossing of the Sioux", the Indian and Red River trails up the Minnesota valley crossed to the north bank of the river and cut across the bend to the mouth of the Cottonwood. Here were fur trade and mission posts and here on July 23, 1851, the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux was signed.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
