Two blocks east, near the corner of 7th and Birch Street, stood the log stockade erected by volunteers late in August, 1862 for defense against the Sioux. Since the town was an important point on the Fort Abercrombie road, the stockade was soon enlarged to include one acre and was garrisoned until the close of the Outbreak.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
