Dakota County · U. S. highway 55, nearest point to the Donnelly House, NW¼ sec. 18, T. 115 N., R. 17 W., Nininger Township · location approximate

Directions to the area ↗

Just north of here stands the home of Ignatius Donnelly, noted orator and a proprietor of the "boom" town of Nininger, laid out in 1856. The panic of 1857 and failure to secure a railroad caused this town of more than 500 to melt away, and by 1869 only the Donnelly House, erected in the sixties, remained.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
