A quarter mile east stands the stone home built by General Henry H. Sibley in 1835 as Minnesota River headquarters of the American Fur Company. Sibley served as first Congressional delegate from Minnesota in 1849, first State Governor in 1858, and commander of the troops in the Sioux Outbreak of 1862. Now maintained as a museum by the D. A. R.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
