About 1866 a trading post on the Fort Wadsworth Trail was established on Tokua Lakes a mile west of town. Early in 1878 Archbishop Ireland after erecting a church on the present town site located several hundred families in the vicinity through the Catholic Colonization Bureau, and named the settlement for Bishop Thomas L. Grace.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
