The Indian Agency for the Lower Sioux was situated about 2 miles southeast of this point from 1853 to 1862. At this Redwood Agency on August 18, 1862 the storm of the Sioux Outbreak first struck. One of the agency buildings still stands, and numerous massacre sites are marked on State Aid Road No. 2.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
