Camp Pope

Established about a mile north of here in the spring of 1863 as a troop concentration point for the Sibley Expedition against the Sioux, was named for General John Pope, department commander. On June 16, 1863, 3,300 men left this camp for the long march to the Missouri. It was occupied again in 1864.
