In 1854 the agency for the Upper Sioux Indians was established near the Yellow Medicine River about a mile from its mouth and some two miles north of this point. During the Sioux Outbreak in August 1862, many whites from this agency and nearby missions were escorted to safety by friendly Indians.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
