Early in 1855 the village of St. Nicholas, the first in Freeborn County, was laid out about one mile east of this point, and soon a general store, a post office, and a hotel were established. A campaign to secure the county seat failed late in 1857, and St. Nicholas became one of Minnesota's vanished towns.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
