At the head of Lake Pepin just east of here, from about 1857 until about 1860 stood Sevastopol, a river town peopled by lumberjacks and raftsmen. Here logs from the Mississippi and the St. Croix were assembled into rafts to be floated down the river. Following a change in the river channel the town disappeared completely.
