Reads Landing
Early in the 19th century Augustine Rocque built a fur post here at the foot of Lake Pepin. The settlement, named for Charles Read, a settler of 1847, became an important steamboat landing and outfitting point for the Chippewa River lumber trade, but railroad building in the seventies ruined the river traffic, and with it, the town.
Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
