Osseo
In July 1852 Pierre Bottineau located a claim on "Bottineau Prairie", within its area the town site was platted in 1856 by Warren Sampson and others. The name Osseo appears in Longfellow's "Hiawatha". Near this site the first log Catholic Church was erected late in 1855, and here in 1863 was built a strong timber stockade for defense against Indians.
Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
