Fort Charlotte
An important fur trade post of the Northwest Company in the late 18th century stood at the end of the Grand Portage Trail on the south bank of Pigeon River about 5 miles west of here. Thence goods were taken by canoes to the interior and furs were portaged to Lake Superior.
Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
