Gladys Buroker (1914-2002)

Gladys Buroker parachuted from planes, piloted gliders, and instructed hundreds of World War II servicemen. During the war, Gladys and husband Herb operated from Coeur d’Alene’s Weeks Field. Gladys trained military pilots; Herb maintained the planes. In the 1970s, the Burokers, along with partner Clay Henley, opened Henley Aerodrome near Athol. Gladys gave flying lessons and entertained visitors with hot-air balloon rides. Gary Norton purchased the Aerodrome in 1981. It gradually evolved into Silverwood Theme Park. Gladys stayed on, managing the airfield for Silverwood’s acclaimed air shows. She retired in 1990 but continued flying well into her 80s.
