The roots of this church can be traced to the efforts of Reverend Elijah Hitch, a local preacher of the Methodist Episcopal denomination, who was invited by area residents to hold services in their homes during the spring of 1842. Later meetings were conducted at the local school, and a successful camp meeting was held nearby in July of that year. Desiring a more permanent place of worship, the new congregation purchased a half-acre of ground at this location on September 27, 1842. A church was then constructed. It was named for one of the oldest Methodist churches in this country, St. George’s in Philadelphia.
