Colonial capital until 1777. Indian village Tamakonck, place of beaver. First town laid out in Delaware. Dutch "Fort Casimir" 1651. Swedish "Fort Trafaldigheets" 1654. Dutch "New Amstel" 1655. English "New Castle" 1664. Home of three signers of Declaration, George Read, George Ross, and Thomas McKean.
