The soldier's friend, Reuel Colt Gridley. Erected by Rawlins Post, Grand Army of the Republic and the citizens of Stockton in gratitude for services rendered Union soldiers during the War of the Rebellion in collecting $275,000 for the Sanitary Commission by selling and reselling a sack of flour.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
