Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park

In the 1850's there were hundreds of Chinese at work in Weaverville and they prospered despite the tax on foreign miners. Although they were thousands of miles from their homeland, they kept up the religious traditions and built their house of worship. The present temple replaced one burned in 1873 and was dedicated April 18, 1874. It is called the "Temple Amongst the Forest Beneath the Clouds." Mr. Moon Lee, son of one of the builders of the temple, gift-deeded in 1956 the temple to the state.
