Whiskeytown

Shasta County · 11.3 miles west of Redding · location approximate

Whiskeytown was settled by gold miners in 1849. The settlement was first called Whiskey Creek, for the stream on which it was located; but was later changed to Whiskeytown. The original name resulted from a barrel of whiskey being lost off a pack mule into the waters of the stream thus christening it with the popular drink of that day. The town is inundated by Whiskeytown Reservoir.
