Site of Fort Guijarros

The plans for this Spanish fort were drawn by Alberto de Cordoba in 1795. The actual work on Fort Guijarros was completed around 1800. Corporal José Velásquez was in command at the time of the Battle of San Diego, when the American brig, Lelia Byrd, was fired upon March 22, 1803.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
