The Packard Brothers and Johnson Brothers of New England during the middle years of the 19th century maintained whaling companies here. To this spot they towed their catch, cut up the whales, tried out the blubber, coopered the oil, and shipped it.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
