The town of Mariposa became the county seat of Mariposa County on November 10, 1851. It was necessary to find temporary quarters of some sort. In 1854 County Judge Bondurant was paid $120 for using his house for a courtroom. A block of land was presented as a gift to the county by William R. Owen. On July 21, 1854, the bid of P. V. Fox and A. F. Shriver for $9,000, being the lowest and best bid, was accepted.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
