Royal Spanish Presidio

This presidio was established under orders of King Carlos III, April 19-21, 1782, by Governor Felipe de Neve, Padre Junípero Serra and Lieutenant José Francisco Ortega, to provide the benefits of government for the inhabitants of the Santa Barbara Channel region of California.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
