Fort Stockton

This fortification dates from about 1838 when San Diegans threw up earthworks here in preparation for an offensive from Los Angeles. It was rebuilt in 1846 as an U.S. Army fortification. It was here on January 29, 1847, that the Mormon Battalion ended their march from Council Bluffs.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
