Grave of 1872 Earthquake Victims

On the date of March 26, 1872, an earthquake of major proportions shook Owens Valley and nearly destroyed the town of Lone Pine. In addition to single burials, 14 of the victims were interred in a common grave enclosed by this fence. (There is some discrepancy as to the number said to be buried in this common grave.)

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
