Father Rinaldi's Foundation of 1856

In the summer of 1853 Father Florian Schwenninger was sent by Archbishop Alemany of San Francisco to take over the mission of Shasta County. In the latter part of 1853 a small wooden church was built. In 1855 Father Raphael Rinaldi was sent to Shasta, and Father Schwenninger moved over to Weaverville. Father Rinaldi was determined to build a church of cut stone. In 1857 the cornerstone of the church was laid. For some reason or another the walls of the church never rose above the foundation, which still can be seen (1963).

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
