San Joaquin County · Fourth and Locust Streets, Ripon · location approximate

Approximately six miles west 20 Mormon pioneers from ship Brooklyn founded first known agricultural colony in San Joaquin Valley, planted first wheat, and also crops they irrigated by pole and bucket method. Erected three log houses, operated sawmill and ferry across Stanislaus. Settlement later known as Stanislaus City.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
