General Vallejo was directed by the Governor-General of California, in 1829, to proceed with troops and punish the Cosumnes Indians as they had been raiding the Spanish ranchers of cattle, horses, and sheep and murdering people. This battle is one of only a few ever fought in California in which cannons were actually used in battle.
