Jamestown

Known as gateway to Mother Lode and southern mines. Gold first discovered in Tuolumne County west of this point on Woods Creek by James Woods shortly before town was founded by Colonel George James August 8, 1848. Large quantities of gold recovered from stream.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
