Gold first found here July 1850 by miners coming over mountains from the Yuba Diggins. Much production during early '50's along this east branch of the Feather River's north fork. Here "Dame Shirley" (Louise Amelia Knapp Smith Clappe) wrote her Letters From The California Mines, one of the foremost classics of the gold rush.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
