Mission San Buenaventura

This mission was the ninth and the last one to be dedicated by Father Junípero Serra, 1782. The first chapel and church were destroyed and the present mission church was begun in 1793 and completed in 1809.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
