This was part of the mission water system for Mission San Buenaventura. This part was called the settling tank or receiving reservoir from which water was distributed to the church and as well to the few Spanish families who had their homes near the mission.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
