Fourth Crossing

Calaveras County · 5 miles south of San Andreas · location approximate

Located on the Stockton-Murphys Road at the fourth crossing of the Calaveras River, this early mining settlement, once called Foremans, was famous in the 1850's for its rich placer ores. Later, it became an important stage and freighting depot and served the southern mines until after the turn of the century.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
