Site of the Lighter Wharf at Bolinas

This wharf was built in the early 1850's for the purpose of loading lumber on lighters to be floated out to deeper water near the channel. From there the timber was transferred to seagoing vessels and shipped to San Francisco.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
