Pioneer House of the Mother Colony

First house built in Anaheim, 1857, by George Hanson, founder. "The Mother Colony" group selected the name given to this settlement. This German group left San Francisco to form grape-growing colony in southern California. Vineyards became largest in California until destroyed, 1885, by grape disease. Colony started producing Valencia oranges. Here once resided Helena Modjeska and Henryk Sienkiewicz, author of Quo Vadis.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
