Around the Anaheim Colony was a wall or fence built of willow poles, planted in the earth which took root and grew, for the purpose of keeping out the herds of wild cattle which roamed the surrounding country. There were gates erected at the north, east, south, and west ends of the two principal streets of the colony. The north gate was the main entrance to the city, it being on the highway to Los Angeles.
