Mission San Juan Capistrano

Founded in 1776 by Padre Junípero Serra. The seventh in the chain of 21 missions established in Alta California to christianize and civilize the Indians. Stone church destroyed in 1812 earthquake. Expropriated during Mexican rule and returned to Catholic Church in 1865 by proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
