Old Landing

Orange County · U.S. 101 and Dover Drive, Newport Beach · location approximate

In 1870 the first schooner, Captain Abbot commanding, entered Newport Bay, unloading its cargo near what is now known as Old Landing. The landing was designated "Newport"—a new port—by James and Robert McFadden, Santa Ana pioneers, who established a regular shipping service here in the middle 1870's.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
